5 Brazil
Welcome to Brazil
Class teachers: Mrs Stoneham and Mr Sheehan
Our class is made up of enthusiastic and creative Year 5 children. At the beginning of September we discussed how we wanted our learning environment to be and the class rules which helped us to create our class Code of Conduct. As class we enjoy all aspects of school life and this term we are focusing on the environment which will include building our own wildlife area. This is something we are really excited about.

Pupil Planners: These are specific to each individual as they have their log ons as well as the spellings that they need to learn. If you need to communicate with me, please use their pupil planner as a means of communication or you can email me using the class email address. When your child reads at home, please sign their planner.
Our Key Skills Day is on Thursday morning and this morning consists of Computing, PE and Outdoor Learning.
Homework
Please can children read at home and have their Pupil Planners signed by a responsible adult. In addition, MyON is an on-line library where children are able to read and then quiz straight away. Spellings are set every Friday and children are provided with two weeks to practise these before being tested on them.
Children can practise their times tables in their books. One sections can be completed daily and if they fancy a challenge, they can extend to division. In addition, Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS) is a fun way to learn, joining in with the tournaments that are set. The jamming section is aimed more at a specific times table. More recently, children are now able to apply their English and Numeracy skills on IDL. Please encourage your child to carry out their homework and have their Pupil Planners signed.

What are we learning about during the Summer term?
Maths - Power Maths
In Maths, children are using Power Maths which is designed to spark curiosity, excitement and nurture confidence in Maths. This half term, we will be investigating geometry as well as measurement.
English
We will be applying our English skills to write cross curricular with our topic in Geography, which is rivers. We will be applying our skills and senses to write a setting description. In addition, we will be learning how to write a persuasive speech. Our class book is Floodland, it is about a young girl called Zoe who finds herself stranded when Norfolk gets covered in water.
Reading
In your child’s Pupil Planner, you will notice the VIPERS letters (illustrated in the poster) have been recorded when your child has read in school. VIPERS is an acronym that we use in school to aid the recall of the 6 reading domains as part of the curriculum. They are the key areas which we feel children need to know and understand in order to improve their comprehensions of texts. Each week, we will focus on a different VIPERS skill which is recorded at the top of the relevant week’s page in the Pupil Planner.
VIPERS is a method of ensuring that we ask, and the children are familiar with, a range of questions. Please find some questions stems, in the VIPERS style we use in school, that you can use to question your child when reading together at home to ensure we are working together with a consistent approach.
A copy of this poster has been stuck inside the children’s planners for your reference.
Connected Curriculum - Rivers
Year 5 are learning all about rivers. We will be looking at how rivers are formed and their features. The children will be learning about erosion ,deposition, hydraulic action, attrition and traction. We will also be comparing different rivers around the world. We will be going out to observe the features of local rivers and writing about our findings.
Home Learning
Science - Forces
In science we will be looking at gravity, buoyancy, friction , air resistance and magnets. We will be carrying out experiments in and around the school and discussing our findings. The children will be writing about their discoveries.
