Hammersmith - Year 5
Summer Curriculum - Year 5
History - This term, our Connected Curriculum theme will be focusing on History and the Ancient civilisation of Ancient Greece in particular. We will be looking at different aspects of life and society in Ancient Greece such as everyday life and the roles of men and women. We will also be comparing the life in this ancient civilisation to life today and what influences have been passed on. We have some really exciting things planned for this including; looking at different artifacts from Ancient Greece, learning about the Spartans and Athenians and also the origins of the Olympics. This will all lead to an exciting end of term project in which the children will be showcasing all that they have learnt in fun and interesting ways.
English - We will be continuing to focus on our SPaG and reading objectives to ensure the children are equipped with all of the skills they need when moving up. This includes; the reading vipers and also objectives such as using adverbs for cohesion and editing and improving their writing. We will be linking these objectives to our History theme, asking the children to apply these SPaG and reading objectives to a certain text type. We will also be continuing with our spelling lessons and homework using Spelling Shed.
Maths - We will be working on our recovery curriculum this term. This includes recapping number and place value objectives, multiplication and division and also number fact work as well as covering new objectives in fractions, percentages and geometry. We will be continuing to follow the Power Maths Curriculum to achieve these objectives. Once a week we have a Snappy Maths lesson where we put our books away and explore different Maths concepts such as reasoning and problem solving and the use of resources. These lessons are a chance to revisit misconceptions and practice methods before the lesson. Every day, the children will be completing a fluent in five session. The children will have 5 minutes to complete arithmetic questions. This session is also a chance for children to share their methods of working out problems with their peers.
Science - We will be moving onto properties of materials for Summer 1 and forces for Summer 2.
RE - This term, we are focusing on traditions and rituals in a number of different religions such as Buddhism and Humanism.
PSHE - We will be covering some objectives including summer safety, job options and friendships. We will also be focusing on RSE (more information will follow for this).
